Smoke versus Vapor

I watched a spotlight feature on a local TV station a few months ago regarding a nifty little gadget called the “Electronic Cigarette” and couldn't help but think it was most likely the greatest thing since sliced bread. What an absolutely brilliant idea ... nicotine without all the harmful chemicals, astounding. It was due to the loss of his father to lung cancer, that Hon Lik, Ruyan's chief designer, delivered the solution to the problem all smokers face ... devastating health issues and ultimately death. He introduced the smoking consumer to the electronic cigarette which he invented and designed in 2003 and over the course of the last few years, the popularity was growing by leaps and bounds.

I am and have been a smoker for years. I wake up each morning feeling lousy, I tire easily, a flight of stairs ... forget it. My problem is that in an odd way, I like to smoke. I hate the fact that they are killing, but like every other smoker ... I keep smoking. I do however know what my habit is doing to me and I decided to invest in one of these nifty little devices. After all, it is a fact that the use of tobacco is the single largest cause of preventable deaths worldwide and accounts for more than 440,000 of the more than 2.4 million annual deaths ... and I figured they certainly couldn't be any more harmful than that, nothing else marketed to the consumer is.

This was however ... right about the same time that the FDA stepped into the picture. We all know who they are ... they are the people that look out for our best interests. You can't help but appreciate their sense of dedication to our Health and Welfare, after all ... we trust them, since the FDA is an agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services responsible for protecting and promoting the nations public health. I couldn't help but feel a little silly ... I was actually going to buy one of those things. Thankfully they stepped in when they did.

I was however curious about what the FDA had uncovered in their report since tobacco products include approximately 599 ingredients many of which are poisonous and carcinogenic in nature and produce about 5,000 toxic chemicals when smoked. To think someone had actually come out with a more dangerous product and had the gall to market it was amazing. You certainly couldn't ignore the FDA warning though and they even provided a phone number you could call to report any adverse effects if you had actually used one of these “so called electronic cigarettes”.

Good lord, I almost bought one !!!

I did a quick search on the internet and sure enough ... there it was. “The FDA’s Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis had analyzed the ingredients in a small sample of cartridges from two leading brands of electronic cigarettes. In one sample, the FDA’s analysis detected diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans, and in several other samples, the FDA analysis detected carcinogens, including nitrosamines. These tests indicate that these products contained detectable levels of known carcinogens and toxic chemicals to which users could potentially be exposed." I even downloaded the Lab Analysis they based their news release on and was even more astounded by what I found. I was shocked ... they were there all right.

The electronic cigarette was tested and they did contain detectable levels. These tests, and I will refer to Table 1. page 4 of the FDA report, actually showed that nitrosamines were not detected in the majority of the samples tested and the results of Dr. Michael Siegels research show levels as follows ... NAB at 0.69, NAT 2.16, NNK showed at 1.46 and NNN was 3.87 ... they total - 8.2 ... now since I'm really not familiar with these nitrosamines, I figured I should check out the levels in the tobacco products as well. Since they are “tobacco specific” they were obviously found in tobacco too , so I decided to check into the levels found in the tobacco products, since that would give me a good idea as to where the levels should be, since cigarettes have been on the market forever. As it turned out, Marlboro showed 190 NAB, Nat was 4900, the NNK level was at 1800 and levels of 4300 showed for NNN. The total nitrosamine level was 11,190 and no that isn't a decimal point.

After finding those results, I checked into the other results from these tests, which the FDA hadn't thought to divulge. These are the results compared to the Nicotrol Inhaler. Limit of detection Cotinine 20 ppb. Anabasine 10 ppb; myosmine 69 ppb; β-nicotyrine 170 ppb – present but at less than the level of the Nicotrol specification. Analyte was detected but at a level less than the limit-of-quantitation.

Side by side with the tobacco products, there is no comparison. The cartridges showed they contain detectable amounts of these tobacco specific nitrosamines ... not the toxic amounts found in all tobacco products. The other results showed the level of these below the Nicitrol Inhaler in almost every test done, although they did not provide in depth analysis, since these were merely preliminary tests performed on a small sample from only two manufacturers.

Working with Health New Zealand, seven leading government, university and commercial laboratories around the world, including facilities in New Zealand and Canada were contracted to perform various tests on the Ruyan electronic cigarette. Included in these facilities was Labstat, a highly regarded Canadian facility. These independent results showed as follows “Findings – Ruyan e-cigarette is designed to be a safe alternative to smoking. The various test result confirm this is the case. It is a very safe alternative to cigarette, and also safe in absolute terms on all measurements we have applied”

I then set about finding test results from some of the other electronic cigarettes ... and each and every example was the same ... the products passed health standards around the world and you don't have to take my word for it ... go to my website Smoke-vs-Vapor.webs.com and look at the test results yourself, they are all there.

If nobody else is going to point out the blatantly obvious ... I will.

The electronic cigarette is in direct competition with the tobacco industry ... a market that the tobacco manufacturers have controlled for decades. Never before has there been a viable alternative to smoking and due to the FDAs “Smoke and Mirrors Release” on July 22nd, it has been made abundantly clear that they do not intend to allow any product a place in the market, that may be in direct competition to their “Cash Cow” the tobacco industry.

Their FDA news release created a worldwide panic resulting in a product boycott, border bans, health warnings regarding the risks involved in using this product, officials around the world have included the electronic cigarette in the public “smoking bans” and charges have even been leveled at some of the manufacturers for continuing to market this product.

The fact that the FDA has led people to believe that the dangers associated with using this product were significant enough to warrant a boycott and ban, definitely sends a message, but the message it sends is that the agency, which is in place to safeguard our health, has a complete different and ulterior agenda.

The public has been led to believe that there is cause for concern regarding the vapor that the electronic cigarette produces which is patently ridiculous. There is no burning of the ingredients, such as with the conventional cigarette and it is the burning of the product, that is required to create the toxic mix of over 4000 chemicals that form the deadly smoke that cigarettes emit. The electronic cigarette utilizes a battery to heat the solution ... and easily compares to the other nicotine products already on the market. In all honesty, I've never seen anyone running for their life and bolting out safety exits when someone uses one of the nicotine inhalers or pops a piece of nicotine gum in their mouth.

They were also concerned about the fact that the electronic cigarette has a variety of flavors, which they felt would be a stepping stone to smoking. They are worried about perhaps peppermint or vanilla flavoring as an example ... but I would think that the tobacco flavored products would be a stepping stone to cigarettes since they are tobacco flavored. They also claimed that the electronic cigarette is specifically marketed to young people since they are available in a variety of flavors ... forgetting of course that all the other nicotine replacement products already in the market place are available in a variety of flavors.

I can't imagine how the nicotine gum ever reached the marketplace since it is also available in a variety of tantalizing flavors and we all know that, historically, gum is a product that has traditionally been aimed directly at our children. I suppose I am to assume that the other nicotine replacement product manufacturers deliberately, maliciously and intentionally set out to trap our young children into gum and lozenge addictions, although I believe that it is much more likely that the manufacturers simply knew that a nicotine tasting product would never sell.

Quite honestly, I am outraged at the collective effort of the numerous agencies involved with this boycott and appalled that they would deliberately and without a moments hesitation, knowingly contribute to the hysteria regarding what is most definitely a much safer alternative to the tobacco products. These are organizations that we ... the public ... have put our trust in. All I had to do, was look at the report to see what was going on and the fact that none of them appear to have even bothered to confirm or disregard the findings in the FDA report shows an absolute disregard for the health and welfare of the smoking consumer and points to a blatant misuse of the authority they are empowered with.

For decades, tobacco products have been maiming and killing hundreds of thousands of people a year and yet, they still sit safely on the store shelves ... and that is the only safe aspect of the tobacco industry. Countless hours of studies and research and trillions of dollars have been spent looking for a viable solution with which to lessen the risks associated with smoking. Now that there is product, which without a doubt, can help reduce these risks, they have ... in a collective effort removed it from the marketplace. To me, it is painfully obvious that, for years we have been lulled into a false sense of security, believing that these organizations were looking after our best interests and our personal well-being.

The individuals involved in the numerous associations, organizations, health care and government sectors worldwide ... knowingly, deliberately and maliciously set out to remove this product from the marketplace, withholding it from the smoking consumer that it was designed for. Countless independent studies have been performed regarding the safety of this product, which confirm that they are as advertised ... a safer alternative.

I expect resignations to be tendered immediately from the parties which have both instigated and have taken part in the boycott and ban of the electronic cigarette. I also expect a complete and thorough investigation into this matter. I am tired of being held hostage to the tobacco industry and want, expect and demand a right to choose and without a doubt, I choose the electronic cigarette.
